Battalion 22 was organized as Battalion 2,. Staten Island on October 1, 1905 at 51 Cottage Place, at the quarters of Engine 207 (now 157). On April 15, 1906, Battalion 2, Staten Island, was redesignated Battalion 22. On November 28, 1930, Battalion 22 relocated to the quarters of Ladder 79 at 1189 Castleton Avenue. Battalion 22 moved to new quarters with Engine 157 and Ladder 80 at 1573 Castleton Avenue on January 23, 1931, but then moved back to Ladder 79's quarters on March 12, 1932.

Battalion 22 covers the "North Shore" of Staten Island, roughly 1/3 of the Island. Their response encompasses a wide mix of occupancies and socio-economic diversity. Everything from ghetto city projects and surrounding areas, to multi-million dollar private dwellings are included in their response area. Quartered in older West Brighton, originally called Factoryville for the large number of factories located there, there are active shipyards and drydock facilities, a large hospital complex, a college campus, the largest paper recycling plant in America, the only active containerport in the city, museums, live theaters, a zoo, the Teleport, a new railroad under construction, a large military reserve facility, a youth detention facility, the largest landfill in the world, petroleum tank farms, and even typical Staten Island large areas of brush included in their response area. There are six engine companies, four ladder companies, three brush fire units, a foam unit, two reserve pumpers, and an EMS station within Battalion 22. Oceanic Volunteer Fire Company, operating a pumper and a brush fire unit are also quartered within the 22nd Battalion.
