Looking at the pictures of Al Donchin at the fire on Moore St. I don't see any particular problems. It was probably a set arson fire. The job of the truck (or Squad of which I was a member of from 1962-1969) is simply to open up everything above the fire. The building was used as a commercial bldg. The fire was set on the second or third floor, or maybe both. The Black smoke going straight up indicates that the fire is going to extend very quickly and take the floors above with it and it is just simply a very tough jopb for the enginemen. Knowing the companies as I do it is just another job.
E-230 is probably first due, E-216 is probably second due and maybe E-218 or even E-237 would be third due. It's been a long time and I'm a little bit hazy about changes and responses. But all the trucks and Engines always did their work in a most professional manner. There is no need to go into detail. That's the Chiefs job. He will ask for more help if he needs it. The job is as an old gentleman from the south said, "Get there the Fustest with the Mostest", and that means water and balls.
